Minority Leader Jeffries Drops The Mask, Signals Democrats Are Coming For The Court
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has openly discussed various options for reforming the Supreme Court, a departure from previous Democratic caution. These options include expanding the number of justices and implementing term limits. Jeffries has also described the Court as a "subsidiary of the MAGA Republican Party." This follows remarks by Kamala Harris, who endorsed expanding the Court to thirteen justices. Jeffries, when pressed on the issue, emphasized the need for dramatic reform, beginning with an ethical code of conduct for justices. He specifically criticized Justices Thomas and Alito for ethically questionable behavior. Jeffries further argued that the Supreme Court has weakened the Voting Rights Act, enabling Jim Crow-like tactics. He indicated that House Democrats, led by Jamie Raskin, will develop specific reform proposals. A Senate bill proposing 18-year terms and biannual appointments has also been introduced. However, such legislation faces significant hurdles, including needing 60 Senate votes and presidential veto power. Jeffries has also alluded to changing Senate rules to allow a simple majority to pass legislation. This potential shift in power, coupled with the filibuster's potential elimination, could fundamentally alter the Supreme Court's composition and the government's functioning.
