"Mobilization Will Be Massive": French Govt Plans To Send Soldiers To The Streets After Admitting Failures
French soldiers from Operation Sentinelle will be deployed to guard static locations, freeing up police and gendarmes for street duty during anticipated protests. This measure comes after the government acknowledged failures in containing recent riots. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu stated that Saturday's security mobilization would be massive. The government faces criticism for underestimating public anger over living costs, while blaming far-left groups for the violence. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez expressed regret for the recent events and accepted responsibility, though his resignation was rejected by President Macron. Roughly 60,000 law enforcement officers were on duty during the previous protests where widespread riots and looting occurred. The unrest resulted in thousands of arrests, injuries to security forces, and extensive damage to businesses amounting to hundreds of millions of euros. Authorities are considering localized curfews and banning undeclared demonstrations to prevent future disorder. This deployment of soldiers for static guarding echoes a strategy used during the 2019 Yellow Vest protests. The unrest is also impacting France's financial standing, with bond yields rising significantly.
