Muslim Hate Preachers OK, Harry Potter Not OK
London faces pressure to cancel Harry Potter-themed Christmas lights due to J.K. Rowling's views on biological sex. The Good Law Project and thousands of petitioners argue the display would fund "anti-trans rights" work and alienate some residents. This comes as authorities have permitted advertising featuring Islamic preachers known for inflammatory anti-gay remarks. City Hall stated the lights are arranged by local businesses, not the Mayor's office. Conservative Assembly Member Emma Best questioned the Deputy Mayor about banning the Harry Potter elements. The Deputy Mayor hesitated, prompting Best to highlight the contrast with previously tolerated anti-gay advertisements. Transport for London has a history of inconsistent ad policies, including allowing Brunei tourism ads despite its death penalty for gay sex. A BBC documentary is also in production about Rowling, framing her as a "polarizing public figure." Rowling maintains that sex is biological and immutable, supporting women's rights while opposing the erasure of single-sex spaces. Critics argue that institutions are treating disagreement with gender ideology as a problem to be excluded.
