Mystery mailings put Congress and election offices on edge

Dozens of congressional lawmakers and election offices in at least 32 states have received suspicious letters containing a white powder. These mailings have caused evacuations and disrupted operations in election offices shortly before the 2026 midterms. The FBI and U.S. Postal Inspection Service are investigating these incidents nationwide. Some of the letters contained an unknown substance, but preliminary tests have not found hazardous materials. Over 100 such letters are estimated to be in circulation. Both Democratic and Republican lawmakers, including prominent leaders, have been targeted. Election offices in states like Ohio, Minnesota, and Connecticut had letters intercepted, while others in Oklahoma, Arizona, and Delaware experienced evacuations. The origin of the letters and whether they are part of a coordinated attack remain unknown. Some letters falsely claimed to be from the Democratic Socialists of America, an organization that denies any involvement.
