NASA and IBM Open Source Lunar Mapping Tools
NASA and IBM have launched an open-source AI model to accelerate lunar research. This foundation model is trained on extensive lunar observation data, integrating multiple data formats and viewing angles. It enables scientists to analyze geographic features more efficiently, moving beyond manual sifting or lower-resolution methods. The model aims to help researchers discover new lunar ice deposits and study volcanic formations and craters. Lunar ice is crucial for future manned missions due to its potential for water and oxygen. Identifying ice in permanently shadowed regions, which are hard to observe, is a key goal. The AI model combines diverse observations to improve predictions of where lunar ice might exist. Accompanying the model is an open-source lunar dataset compiled by IBM and NASA scientists. This dataset features over 30 spatially aligned layers from nine instruments across four missions. It contains tens of thousands of images and maps detailing the Moon's geophysical properties.
