Nationwide meat recall underway as ‘temperature abuse’ impacts 1.5 million pounds of beef, pork, and chicken
A massive recall of over 1.5 million pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products was initiated by Kayem Foods Inc. due to "temperature abuse." This means the products' temperatures deviated from safe storage levels, potentially making them unsafe for consumption. The issue was discovered after a customer complaint led to an investigation revealing a cooling system malfunction in one of Kayem's warehouses. The recall affects products sold under nine brands including Al Fresco, Kayem, and McKenzie, encompassing various sausages, chicken, pork, and bacon items. Affected products bear specific establishment numbers "EST. M/P 7839," "EST. P 20935A," and "EST. M 9520" within the USDA mark of inspection. These items were produced and shipped between specific date ranges, as detailed by the FSIS and Kayem Foods. The recalled items were distributed to retail and foodservice locations nationwide and in Hong Kong. There have been no reported illnesses linked to the consumption of these products so far. Consumers are advised to check their refrigerators and dispose of any recalled items or return them to the point of purchase.
