New Dietary Guidelines Abandon Longstanding Advice on Alcohol

The US government, since 1980, has recommended specific daily alcohol limits for Americans. These guidelines previously advised limits of one or two drinks per day for men and one for women. However, the latest dietary guidelines have undergone significant changes. They now broadly advise people to consume less alcohol for better health. Crucially, the new guidelines remove the specific daily alcohol limits, representing a major shift. The older warnings about alcohol's potential to increase cancer risk are also absent. The guidelines specifically caution pregnant individuals and those with alcohol use disorders to avoid alcohol. They also advise awareness for those with a family history of alcoholism. The updated guidelines make no distinction between genders regarding alcohol consumption. There is no advisory on underage drinking either. The previous warnings about risks of cancer and cardiovascular disease have been omitted entirely. These omissions mark a significant departure from decades of established advice.
