New discoverable space setting in Google Chat

Google Chat is introducing a new "Discoverable" access option for spaces. This new option sits between private and open spaces, making them searchable within an organization. However, messages remain private until a user is approved to join. This feature aims to help leaders build easily discoverable groups while maintaining data privacy. It is particularly useful for employee resource groups or project teams requiring membership vetting. Advanced settings allow for mixing user groups when sharing spaces with multiple audiences. Currently, this setting is only available in space settings but will be extended to space creation soon. There are no admin controls for this feature; space owners and managers can update it. The rollout begins on June 15, 2026, with API and mobile support to follow. This feature is available to all Google Workspace customers.
