New Mexico Wants Meta To Pay $40 Billion In Penalties For Cambridge Analytica Scandal

New Mexico has requested Meta Platforms pay between $35 billion and $40 billion in penalties. This comes after a jury found Meta misled consumers about Facebook data privacy, stemming from the Cambridge Analytica scandal. The lawsuit arose from the harvesting of personal data from millions of Facebook users without their consent by Cambridge Analytica. Meta's misleading statements were found by a jury on September 25. The judge overseeing the case in Santa Fe will determine the final penalty amount. New Mexico law allows for fines up to $5,000 per violation. Attorneys for the state argued for a significant penalty to impact Meta's stock price, suggesting the requested amount represents about 20% of maximum possible fines. Meta's legal team deemed the state's request an "astronomical penalty" violating constitutional provisions. Meta proposed a cap of $3.45 billion in court filings. The company also contended that it does not sell user data and that New Mexico failed to prove consumers were actually misled. The judge anticipates issuing a ruling later this month.
