New Orleans is piloting an artificial intelligence agent to handle 911 calls. The Orleans Parish Communication District is using the AI to reduce the workload on human dispatchers who manage over a thousand emergency calls daily. Previously, AI was implemented in April for 311 non-emergency calls, programmed to deliver information as half of these calls are for informational purposes. Now, AI is also answering emergency 911 calls in this major U.S. city with a high call volume. The system, Carbyne's AI Emergency Call Triage, analyzes and prioritizes incoming calls. It is designed to handle situations with multiple callers about the same incident. Callers reporting the specific incident are automatically routed to the AI for information or updates. Those not calling about the identified incident are transferred to a human dispatcher. This AI effectively manages call surges, preventing delays in answering critical emergencies. The AI's role is strictly to triage and direct calls, not to handle the actual emergency response.
