News outlets broadly reject Pentagon's new press rules
Newsmax and the Washington Times join other national news organizations in refusing to sign a Pentagon agreement. The agreement could limit journalists' ability to gather or report information not officially authorized, raising concerns about press freedom. The Pentagon's new restrictions require reporters to pledge commitment to its rules to maintain press credentials. After negotiations, the Pentagon clarified that journalists are not required to submit writings before publication but still threatens to revoke credentials for non-signers. Major news organizations like The Washington Post, The Atlantic, and The Wall Street Journal oppose the restrictions, citing First Amendment concerns. They assert they will continue to report on the Pentagon independently despite the policy. The White House Correspondents' Association and State Department Correspondents' Association support the Pentagon Press Association. The new rules are part of a broader effort to control information from the Pentagon, including limiting engagement with the public. One America News is the only outlet indicating it will sign the pledge.
