California successfully navigated its hottest August on record without experiencing rolling power outages, a significant improvement since 2020. This enhanced grid resilience is largely attributed to a dramatic increase in battery energy storage capacity. These batteries store solar energy generated during the day for use during peak demand hours in the evening. In contrast to 2020, when the state had less than 100 megawatts of battery storage and experienced outages, it now has over 17,000 megawatts available. California aims to add an additional 20,000 to 25,000 megawatts of battery storage by 2045, aligning with its carbon neutrality goal. The state has also steadily increased its reliance on renewable energy sources like solar and wind power. A rise in rooftop solar installations has further boosted power availability. Furthermore, California's grid integration with other Western U.S. power systems allows it to import energy from cooler regions during heat waves. These combined efforts have enabled the state's electrical system to withstand prolonged periods of extreme heat.
