Secretary of War Pete Hegseth stated that failing to appropriate $1.5 trillion for the Pentagon’s Fiscal Year 2027 budget is the greatest threat to US national security. Hegseth, joined by other officials, appeared before the Senate Appropriations Committee to discuss the Trump administration's request for an additional $87.6 billion in supplemental spending. Most of this supplemental funding, $76.5 billion, is intended for the Pentagon, with $11.1 billion for US farmers. The war with Iran has depleted Pentagon funds and impacted the fertilizer market farmers rely on. Hegseth defended the supplemental funding, claiming it would be part of the FY27 budget, not in addition to it. The House of Representatives authorized $1.15 trillion of the military budget, but the Senate has yet to approve it. There is no guarantee of Senate approval, as Democrats largely oppose the funding, and even some Republicans are hesitant due to the massive price tag. Hegseth characterized the full budgetary request as a "generational investment" and emphasized the urgency of the supplemental funding for the department's immediate needs. These "immediate needs" refer to the ongoing war with Iran, which Hegseth stated cost $37.5 billion, though independent analysis suggests a much higher cost, potentially over $100 billion. The requested $1.5 trillion budget represents a nearly 50% increase from the current year's over $1 trillion military budget.
