Now generally available: Preview client-side encrypted PDF and image files directly in Google Drive
Client-side encryption (CSE) provides organizations with complete control over sensitive data access through customer-managed encryption keys. Google Drive now allows direct previewing of CSE files within the Drive interface. Previously, users had to download encrypted non-native files to view their content locally. This new capability enables authorized users to instantly preview encrypted documents and images in their browser without leaving Drive. The feature enhances productivity and security by eliminating the need for additional downloads. Currently, previewing is supported only in Drive for encrypted PDF and image file formats. No administrative controls are required for this feature, and it is enabled by default for end-users. The rollout began on October 15, 2026, for both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains. This functionality is available for Enterprise Plus, Education Standard and Plus, and certain other editions. Resources for further information are available through Google Workspace Admin Help and the Google Workspace Help Center.
