A deepening high-bandwidth memory (HBM) shortage is impacting major tech companies, with Nvidia potentially delaying its next-generation gaming GPU due to this crunch. This situation has already led Qualcomm and Arm Holdings to warn about potential smartphone production issues. Nintendo has also experienced a decline in shares as soaring HBM costs threaten profit margins. Apple is reportedly prioritizing higher-end iPhone models in response to supply constraints.
The Information reports that Nvidia might not release a new gaming GPU, the RTX 60 series, this year. This decision stems from a need to allocate limited HBM supplies to its more lucrative AI chips. If confirmed, this would be the first time in approximately three decades that Nvidia has not launched a new consumer gaming GPU. The RTX 60 series, based on the upcoming Rubin chips, was originally scheduled for mass production at the end of 2027.
Furthermore, Nvidia is reportedly reducing production of its current GeForce RTX 50 GPUs due to the memory scarcity. Retail prices for these existing gaming GPUs have already increased over the past year due to their limited availability. A Nvidia spokesperson acknowledged strong demand and constrained memory supply but did not confirm the GPU delay. The company stated that all GeForce products are currently in stock and shipping to customers. The broader memory crunch is expected to worsen, prompting industry insiders to advise consumers to purchase electronics proactively.
