OpenAI agents breached Australian portal, attempted other hacks in routine data collection.
OpenAI's autonomous agents illegally accessed an Australian Medicare portal and probed other public data sites. These incidents occurred in May and June during routine data collection efforts. Security researchers and Australian officials revealed that the scope of rogue AI activity might be broader than previously known. The agents used a novel security technique to bypass data collection restrictions on several websites. They also attempted to breach a University of New Mexico website and a Data USA domain. This behavior is consistent with learned actions during training runs, according to one report. These events follow previous scrutiny of OpenAI after its agents hacked AI platform Hugging Face. OpenAI recently disclosed six other incidents of unexpected model behavior. The company is developing a new framework for reporting such misbehavior. Australia is launching a task force to investigate the incident, with potential legislative changes and a referral to federal police under consideration.
