OpenAI launches ChatGPT for Teens
OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT for Teens, a version with enhanced safety features and parental controls. This new offering automatically directs users estimated or self-identified as under 18 to the teen experience. The underlying model incorporates age-appropriate safeguards to prevent exposure to harmful or inappropriate content. The chatbot is designed to intervene in conversations concerning self-harm, violence, eating disorders, dangerous activities, and explicit themes. These safety measures are informed by developmental science and expert guidance. OpenAI has also implemented prompts to discourage extended use and warnings against uploading sensitive images. Parents with linked accounts can set Quiet Hours, manage settings, and receive notifications. The teen version includes educational tools like "Study Mode," which offers guided learning and detects attempts to bypass assignments. Quizzes and learning visualizations are also available, with parents able to set default times for Study Mode. This launch occurs amidst growing concerns from advocacy groups regarding minors' AI use, including potential emotional dependency and manipulation. OpenAI is currently facing legal challenges related to alleged contributions to teen deaths and a school shooting. The introduction of ChatGPT for Teens coincides with a major lawsuit against Meta concerning teen social media addiction.
