OpenAI may be close to introducing ads for ChatGPT

OpenAI has put its plans to introduce advertising in ChatGPT on hold due to a growing threat from Google's Gemini AI. The company's CEO, Sam Altman, sent a memo to staff declaring a "code red" and ordering the primary focus to be on improving ChatGPT. This decision came after an engineer discovered lines of code referencing ads in a beta version of ChatGPT's Android app. Altman has previously expressed mixed feelings about introducing ads in ChatGPT, stating that he hates ads personally but is not totally against them. The discovery of ad code is not conclusive proof that ChatGPT will incorporate advertisements, and it is possible that OpenAI is planning to work with other companies to personalize ad content on other sites. OpenAI did not immediately reply to a request for comment about the ad code, and the company is currently focusing on improving personalization, speed, and reliability for its users. ChatGPT has become a major player in the AI space, with 800 million weekly active users, but it is facing increasing competition from Google's Gemini AI. Altman's memo indicates that the company is feeling the pressure from Gemini and other AI firms, and is spending heavily to maintain its leadership in the AI space. OpenAI generates revenue from partnerships with businesses and paid subscriptions, and is on track to hit $20 billion in revenue this year, but expects to post massive losses in the coming years due to the high cost of computing. The company's goal is to improve ChatGPT and maintain its position in the market, with Altman expecting revenue to grow to hundreds of billions by 2030.
