OpenAI Rolls Out GPT-5.6 After Government Greenlight, Announces 'ChatGPT Work'

OpenAI has obtained approval from the Trump administration for the public release of GPT-5.6. They have also introduced ChatGPT Work, a new agent powered by GPT-5.6. This agent integrates ChatGPT and Codex capabilities, enabling it to access user-selected apps, files, and workflows. ChatGPT Work can then generate various materials like documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. A unified plugins directory allows ChatGPT to connect with tools such as Slack, Gmail, and Google Drive. The ChatGPT desktop app will provide immediate access to GPT-5.6 and ChatGPT Work for Mac and Windows users globally. Initially, mobile and web access will be for Pro, Enterprise, and Edu users, with other tiers gaining access soon. This release positions ChatGPT Work as a competitor to Anthropic's Claude Cowork. OpenAI is particularly optimistic about Sol, a GPT-5.6 model, for its advancements in coding, cybersecurity, and science. The company is also promoting GPT-5.6 as a more cost-effective option compared to rival models.
