OpenAI is launching a new initiative to offer subsidized access to its AI models for critical infrastructure and essential services. This program aims to help organizations like water systems, electricity providers, and local governments bolster their cybersecurity defenses. Critical infrastructure entities often lack the resources to adequately prepare for AI-powered cyberattacks. OpenAI president Greg Brockman announced this new effort at a security leaders summit. The initiative, called Daybreak for Frontline Defenders, is a $1 billion commitment. This funding will provide subsidized model access, training, technical support, and partnerships. A related program, Daybreak for America, specifically targets local governments and other critical infrastructure providers in the US. OpenAI is partnering with the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center for a pilot training program on AI model usage. They are also collaborating with over 35 technology and cybersecurity firms to integrate their AI models into existing tools. This move is in response to growing concerns that advanced AI could be used to autonomously exploit system vulnerabilities. OpenAI believes its models can help these organizations review code, analyze threats, identify vulnerabilities, prioritize risks, and develop security patches. However, it is acknowledged that these AI tools will likely add to existing cybersecurity challenges faced by critical infrastructure.
