Ōtamahua Ship’s Graveyard in Lyttelton, New Zealand

The ship graveyard on Ōtamahua, also known as Quail Island, in Lyttelton Harbour, New Zealand, holds the remains of more than a dozen vessels abandoned between the 1880s and 1950s. After years of service, these ships were later scuttled in the shallows, leaving haunting silhouettes of Canterbury’s maritime past. Among the best known are the Darra, a 19th-century clipper turned coal hulk, and the steamer Mataiti. The wrecks are most accessible at low tide, viewed from walking tracks or by kayak. Fragile and protected, they form an eerie open-air museum—quiet relics of the harbour’s seafaring history. This location makes a great day trip from Ōtautahi/Christchurch.
