Our Post-Truth, Post-Trust World

We live in a post-truth and post-trust world where claims of truth are designed to persuade rather than reflect reality. The concept of objective truth, once established through repeatable observations, has been corrupted. Now, data collection and analysis are manipulated to serve private interests, often through biased sampling and analysis. Synthetic media, including AI, further blurs the lines by mimicking human characteristics and bypassing rational filters. Social media and smartphones amplify these technologies, spreading them with great virulence. This digital signaling bypasses the need for trust or real-world connection, triggering dopamine responses instead. These signals are small, easily replicated, and act like cognitive viruses that circumvent our natural skepticism. Unlike ancient, costly displays of power that reflected real wealth, digital synthetic signaling is virtually free and disconnected from reality. This self-referential signaling, where ubiquity implies plausibility, is easily falsified and generated by automation. Systems that rely on these synthetic signals are doomed to collapse as they consume resources needed for core structures while creating a false sense of continuity. Ultimately, this constant barrage of synthetic signals drains authentic cognition and emotion, leaving individuals detached and incapable of independent thought, mirroring a system's collapse.
