Passport-free travel is coming to 13 major U.K. airports. Here’s who’s eligible
The United Kingdom is introducing contactless border control at its 13 international airports. This new system, called Seamless Gate, is developed by Amadeus and uses facial recognition. Initially, it will be available for U.K. citizens, verifying biometric data against prestored travel information. The goal is to make journeys smoother and faster while maintaining robust border security.Later, eligible foreign nationals, including those from the EU and U.S. with electronic travel authorization, will also be able to use the technology. Travelers flagged for further checks will be redirected to a U.K. Border Force officer or asked to scan their passport. This project is a long-term collaboration between Amadeus, U.K. Border Force, and the U.K. Home Office. The pilot program began in October, with full deployment expected early next year. This digital transformation builds on previous efforts to extend eGates to children aged 8 and above.
