The Pentagon has finalized agreements with seven AI companies to integrate their tools into classified Defense Department networks. These companies include SpaceX, OpenAI, Google, Nvidia, Reflection AI, Microsoft, and AWS. This move aims to grant the military greater access to advanced AI products for sensitive operations. Reflection AI, a less prominent company, is backed by a venture capital firm with ties to Donald Trump Jr. In contrast, Anthropic was excluded due to being identified as a supply-chain risk and an ongoing dispute over military-use guardrails. This dispute has led to legal action between Anthropic and the Pentagon. Following the Anthropic issue, the military has accelerated its AI adoption process for newer entrants. The incorporation of AI is intended to improve military planning, logistics, and targeting capabilities. The Pentagon seeks to prevent "vendor lock" by diversifying its AI service providers. The Pentagon's primary AI platform, GenAI.mil, has already seen significant adoption among Defense Department personnel.
