A significant portion, over 148,000 entries, are listed as donors, many giving small amounts. This information also reportedly includes details related to MAGA hat purchases and extends back to 2005. Grassley asserts this data collection was excessively invasive and beyond the scope of Smith's mandate. He claims this demonstrates an effort to map the entire Republican Party apparatus. Smith previously confirmed to the committee that his team acquired financial information, including donor data. This follows earlier disclosures of thousands of checks from Trump donors obtained by Smith's team. Grassley has been releasing details of subpoenas and data requests made by Smith's office for a year, characterizing them as "fishing expeditions." Smith is currently facing legal challenges and a bar complaint regarding his investigative methods.
