Philips Hue Plans To Make All Your Lights Motion Sensors
Philips Hue is introducing MotionAware, a new feature that transforms smart bulbs into motion sensors using RF Zigbee signals. This upgrade is compatible with most Hue bulbs manufactured since 2014, but necessitates the new $99 Bridge Pro hub. To set up a MotionAware zone, users require the Bridge Pro and at least three mains-powered Hue devices in a room. This includes bulbs, light strips, and fixtures, though portable and battery-powered devices are excluded. MotionAware functions as occupancy sensing, detecting movement similar to passive infrared (PIR) sensors, and can be triggered by pets. A sensitivity slider in the app allows for fine-tuning detection, and unlike PIR, it offers broader area coverage and is not limited by line of sight. While it cannot sense light levels, this can be supplemented by pairing a light sensor. The placement of lights is crucial for effective motion detection, with lights surrounding an area defining the detection zone. Beyond lighting automation, MotionAware integrates with Hue Secure for security purposes, allowing motion to trigger flashing lights, sirens, and phone alerts. The technology relies on RF sensing, with AI algorithms on the Bridge Pro analyzing disruptions detected by the wireless signals. This advanced processing capability is why the feature is exclusive to the Bridge Pro, as the older V2 bridge lacks the necessary power.
