Photos: Powerful storm pummels U.S. East Coast
A deadly storm lashed the U.S. East Coast with heavy rain, flooding, and strong winds. States of emergency were declared in New Jersey and New York due to the extreme weather. Thousands of flights were delayed or canceled at Northeast airports, including those in New York City and Boston. One death occurred in New York City from a dislodged solar panel. A plane crash in Massachusetts, potentially storm-related, caused two fatalities. Coastal flooding persisted due to strong winds in the western Atlantic and high tides. Wind advisories remained only for Cape Cod and nearby islands as the storm moved away. Western Alaska was also hit by the remnants of Typhoon Halong, resulting in one death and multiple injuries. Search and rescue efforts saved over fifty people and two dogs in Alaska. Extreme precipitation events have become more frequent and intense since the 1950s.
