Physicists Identify 'Octupolar' Magnetism, With Implications for Quantum Technologies
Recent breakthroughs in quantum mechanics have revealed a phenomenon called "octupolar order" in magnetic materials. In this state, particles in a crystal arrange themselves to behave as if they have eight magnetic poles instead of the usual two. Scientists at the University of Toronto have developed an innovative technique to observe these hidden quantum magnetic states. Their method uses light to investigate the subtle atomic vibrations caused by spinning electrons. This new approach allows for the detection of magnetic orders that are invisible to conventional probes. The researchers identified distinct optical signatures of this octupolar magnetism using a specific type of rotating light. This advancement is crucial for the potential application of multipolar magnetism in future technologies. Such applications include next-generation data storage and computing devices. The discovery provides a new way to explore and control previously inaccessible forms of magnetism. Ultimately, this research paves the way for the development of new quantum technologies.
