Pollster Cited By NY Times, Other Outlets Admits It's Fake

A company named Wedgewood Polling admitted that all but one of its surveys were fabricated. The company claimed its purpose was to expose the lack of scrutiny in media and public commentary regarding polling data. Wedgewood Polling stated that its surveys, often lacking real data, were nonetheless integrated into poll averages by major outlets like The New York Times. The fabricated numbers, which frequently favored Democrats, were granted instant credibility across national media platforms. A single legitimate poll in Nebraska was conducted to serve as a comparison against the fabricated data. Wedgewood Polling maintained that its intention was not to mislead the public or influence elections, but rather to prompt reform in the polling and media industries. Decision Desk HQ removed 17 Wedgewood Polling surveys, rerunning its forecast model, though this did not alter projected seat totals. Zachary Donnini of VoteHub recounted including Wedgewood Polling’s surveys after speaking with its head pollster, who claimed to be a college student with polling experience. Donnini expressed disappointment, noting this incident will make it harder for genuine, well-intentioned young people to enter the polling field. FiftyPlusOne, another aggregator, said its prior inquiries to Wedgewood Polling led to the company's admission of fabricating most of its surveys.
