Grand, classical buildings recently constructed line the Vardar River, a testament to the nation's post-Yugoslav independence. Behind these, however, lie functional, gray structures characteristic of the Communist era, with Brutalism being a prominent style.A notable architectural gem, the Post and Telecommunications Building by Janko Konstantinov, is situated near the river. Konstantinov, an accomplished architect with international experience, contributed significantly to Skopje's post-earthquake reconstruction. The Post and Telecommunications complex is widely regarded as his finest work.The Post Office, completed in 1974, features an open lotus shape symbolizing rebirth and Brutalist flying buttresses evoking Balkan monasteries. Adjacent to it, the Telecommunications building showcases cylindrical towers and circular windows, built between 1979 and 1981. Within the Post Office lobby, concrete ribs blend archaic and futuristic aesthetics.A fire in 2013 caused substantial damage, including the loss of its glass dome and interior murals. Currently, there are proposals to transform the entire complex into a cultural center.
