Preview, edit and collaborate on Markdown (.md) files natively across Drive and Docs
Google Docs now supports native viewing, editing, and collaboration on Markdown files. This feature eliminates the need for manual file conversions, which previously could alter formatting and remove comments. Markdown is a lightweight text format preferred by Large Language Models for structured content like tables and lists. Users can now edit Markdown directly in Google Docs, preserving its original structure and enabling real-time collaboration. This avoids the complexities of raw syntax editing and fragmentation of files. Google Drive will also display rendered previews of Markdown files, showing formatted documents with clickable links and tables. This new functionality is available to all Google Workspace customers and users with personal Google accounts. Admins and end users do not need to enable any specific settings for this feature. The rollout began on October 5, 2026, and will be completed within 15 days. Further details can be found in the Google Help Center.
