Python Software Foundation: Wikis: Relaunched!

In February 2026, the Python Software Foundation (PSF) made its wikis read-only due to security risks and excessive bot traffic overwhelming outdated infrastructure. This abrupt decision caused disruption for community members who relied on and contributed to these resources. To address these issues, the PSF has launched new wikis hosted on GitHub Pages, offering a modern front-end and a permissions-based content management system. These new wikis are now accessible via provided links for the PSF, Python, and Jython wikis. The excessive automated traffic was primarily from AI bots attempting to scrape the internet, which overloaded the old servers. Additionally, some portions of the old wikis were running on unsupported Python 2, posing security vulnerabilities. The PSF acknowledges the frustration caused by the sudden retirement of the old wikis, especially for dedicated contributors. They aim for the new wikis to be a valuable and improved community resource, with contributions now managed through pull requests on GitHub. GitHub was chosen to streamline hosting and stewardship, aligning with existing PSF-hosted projects. The new permissions-based system via GitHub repositories allows anyone to request changes through pull requests. This move to a static site generated on GitHub mitigates security risks and protects against bot-driven overload. Contributions are encouraged by reviewing repository README files, and established contributors will be granted write access.
