Ransomware detection and file restoration for Google Drive available in beta
Google is introducing two new beta features to combat ransomware attacks impacting personal computers. Ransomware detection will automatically pause file syncing on Google Drive for desktop when malicious software is identified. Users will receive notifications, while administrators will see alerts in the Admin console and receive email notifications. Additionally, a file restoration feature will allow users to easily revert to previous file versions, bypassing the need to pay a ransom. Admins can manage these features from the Google Workspace Admin console, with ransomware detection and file restoration enabled by default. For ransomware detection, admins need to ensure users have Drive for desktop version 114 or later installed. End-user availability is dependent on administrator settings. The admin console settings will roll out starting September 30, 2025, and the detection and restoration features will gradually become available from October 14, 2025. File restoration is available to all Google Workspace customers and personal Google account users. Ransomware detection is available for specific Google Workspace editions including Business Standard/Plus and various Enterprise and Education tiers. Resources are provided for admins and end-users to learn more about managing and utilizing these new security tools.
