Record-breaking El Niño could be a preview of Earth’s future. It’s not pretty

The current El Niño is intensifying and could become one of the strongest on record. This phenomenon amplifies global weather patterns, leading to extreme conditions worldwide. Forecasters predict intense droughts in some areas and increased storms and precipitation, causing severe floods elsewhere. This year's El Niño is exacerbating already high ocean temperatures and record summer heat. Consequently, the planet's monthly global average temperature might temporarily surpass the 2-degree Celsius warming limit. While 2 degrees Celsius is not a safe threshold for warming, exceeding it amplifies climate change impacts. This El Niño offers a glimpse into a future world where global temperatures are significantly higher. Experts describe the next year as a potential stress test with extreme heat and crop losses. The warming brought by this El Niño is compared to the projected global temperatures of the 2030s. However, El Niño's warming is a temporary redistribution of heat, unlike the persistent warming caused by greenhouse gases. While El Niño causes regional temperature and rainfall shifts, it doesn't replicate the uniform, planet-wide warming from human emissions. Nevertheless, this El Niño will bring unprecedented amplified impacts to certain regions, foreshadowing what a hotter Earth holds.
