Together, wind and solar output surpassed nuclear power generation by a considerable margin in April. Renewables, as a whole, constituted 30.0% of the total U.S. electrical generation during the initial part of 2026. Utility-scale solar capacity overtook wind capacity for the first time in April 2026. Battery energy storage capacity also saw a remarkable jump during this period. The expansion of all utility-scale renewable energy sources significantly outpaced the growth seen in the preceding year. Projections indicate no new nuclear capacity and a net decrease in fossil fuel capacity.
