Rep. Tom Kean discloses depression diagnosis upon return from months-long absence
Representative Tom Kean of New Jersey has revealed he was absent from the House for nearly four months due to a diagnosis of depression. This prolonged absence left his New Jersey district without a voting representative for over 100 days. Kean explained on the House floor that he entered the hospital for testing of unspecified health concerns several months ago. He stated he was diagnosed with depression and his doctors recommended he stay in the hospital. This speech was his first public explanation for his extended absence since March 5. Kean acknowledged that delivering this personal explanation was difficult but felt it was necessary for transparency. Previously, his office had only stated he was addressing a "personal medical issue" and expected a full recovery. His return date was not initially provided, but was later announced for June 30. Kean's absence significantly impacted House Republicans, as Speaker Mike Johnson operates with a very slim majority. Many Republican members and New Jersey constituents had expressed criticism over the lack of information regarding Kean's condition and return.
