The author is catching up on blog posts after a hiatus. They recently had a talk accepted for FOSS4G UK 2026, which prompted them to write about a workshop they led at FOSS4G UK 2025. The workshop focused on generating live vector tiles from a PostGIS database using the pg_tileserv tool. Participants learned how to serve tiles directly from tables and PostGIS functions, with practical exercises provided. The workshop aimed to demonstrate the power of on-the-fly vector tile generation for complex geospatial workflows.Separately, the author also presented a talk titled "Lights, Spectrometer, Action!" at the Electromagnetic Field festival. This talk explored the science of spectrometry, involving live demonstrations with a spectrometer. They examined light from various sources and its interaction with different materials. The talk also touched upon satellite imaging applications of spectrometry and potential uses in chemistry.Looking ahead, the author will present at FOSS4G UK 2026 on making Environment Agency DEM data accessible. They have converted this data into cloud-native formats like STAC and COG, facilitating easier access and analysis. This work allows for efficient creation of DEM mosaics and custom web map visualizations. The author is also developing custom software for spectrometer control.
