Rogue House Republicans help Dems kill a vote to censure LaMonica McIver in shock result
House Democrats, with Republican support, successfully blocked a motion to censure Representative LaMonica McIver. The censure attempt arose from an incident in April where McIver clashed with ICE officers. McIver faces federal charges for assaulting a law enforcement officer, but she maintains her innocence and claims the charges and censure are politically motivated. She stated that Republicans are mistaken if they believe they can intimidate her. The House voted 215 to 207 to table, effectively killing, the censure resolution. This resolution claimed McIver's actions did not reflect creditably on the House. It also cited a conflict of interest due to her position on the Homeland Security Committee, which oversees ICE. Rep. Clay Higgins forced the vote on the resolution through a procedural maneuver. The incident occurred when McIver and other Democrats were denied access to a migrant detention center. Prosecutors allege McIver assaulted an officer, while she states she was the one assaulted.
