Russia Accused of Severing Ukrainian Nuclear Power Plant's Link, as Energy Remains a 'Key Battleground'

Russia is accused of severing the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant's power line to connect it to the Russian grid. Ukraine fears Russia aims to redirect the plant's output, a move Moscow denies. The plant, currently offline, relies on emergency generators after losing external power for weeks. Russia's occupation has deprived Ukraine of a significant portion of its energy capacity. The invasion began on the same day Ukraine tested grid isolation before synchronizing with the European grid. A potential motive for the invasion could be Russia’s desire to regain control of the Ukrainian nuclear fuel market. Ukraine had planned to build new nuclear reactors with Westinghouse, a project valued at billions of dollars, before the invasion. The Ukrainian energy sector was designed for redundancy, a legacy of the Soviet era. Russia targeted Ukraine's energy infrastructure to demoralize the population and cripple the economy. Despite extensive attacks, the system's robustness and Western support ensured resilience.
