Russia Was Not Ready For the Data Center War It Started With Ukraine
Russia's initial attacks on Ukrainian data centers and telecommunications infrastructure have apparently backfired. Ukrainian drone strikes have since disrupted services at three major Yandex data centers, Russia's largest tech company. This has led to widespread outages affecting critical digital services within Russia. Pro-Kremlin bloggers are warning of a potential collapse of Russia's centralized digital economy. They suggest Russia was unprepared for the "data center war" it initiated. Ukrainian digital services, being more decentralized, are seen as potentially more resilient. Russia began targeting Ukrainian infrastructure in late September, impacting internet and mobile services. Ukraine's response, described as "symmetrical," has targeted Yandex data centers. The damage to Yandex facilities has interrupted payment apps, digital banking, and e-commerce. Essential services like ride-hailing, food delivery, and navigation are also affected. The outages extend to Yandex's cloud computing service, impacting major Russian companies.
