Sam Bankman-Fried, Former Crypto Billionaire, Appeals His Conviction To the US Supreme Court

Sam Bankman-Fried, convicted of defrauding investors, has asked the Supreme Court to grant him a new trial. He also seeks to overturn a court order mandating he pay $11 billion as part of his sentence. Bankman-Fried was sentenced to 25 years for allegedly diverting billions from FTX to Alameda Research. These funds were reportedly used for risky investments, donations, and personal gain. His appeal focuses on a technicality concerning evidence presented at his trial. He argues he should have been allowed to show his investments were ultimately sound and would have covered customer losses. Bankman-Fried also claims the $11 billion forfeiture violates the Eighth Amendment's prohibition on excessive fines. An attorney stated that introducing evidence of victim losses is prejudicial if the fraud theory doesn't require them to have lost money. This is especially true if victims actually did not lose money and the defendant cannot prove it. The 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals previously rejected these arguments.
