Samsung’s surprise folding hit sets the stage for Apple

Samsung is known for its public experimentation with new phone form factors, from large screens to foldables. Their latest foldable offerings include the Galaxy Z Fold8 and the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, representing a public A/B test of different designs. The new Galaxy Z Fold8 features a wider, squatter outer display and a 4:3 inner screen, making it more suitable for general use and content consumption. In contrast, the Z Fold8 Ultra is geared towards power users, excelling in multitasking with its design allowing side-by-side app functionality. Although the Z Fold8 has some minor quirks like speaker placement, it has garnered significant public interest, with preorders heavily favoring it. Samsung's approach to this new widescreen foldable form factor seems to be hitting a sweet spot. This development is particularly relevant as Apple is also anticipated to launch its first folding phone with a similar widescreen design. Apple's existing strong software ecosystem, especially for tablets, positions it well to adapt apps for a foldable device. While initially niche and expensive, this widescreen foldable design offers a clear path to mainstream appeal. Samsung appears to have laid the groundwork for this future trend in mobile technology.
