San Fran's Tenderloin District Stores Double As "Secret Casinos" And "Sleazy Drug Dens"

San Francisco authorities have taken action against nine Tenderloin convenience stores due to illegal activities. These stores were hubs for drug dealing, illegal gambling, and selling stolen goods. City Attorney David Chiu stated the shops fueled "drug-driven lawlessness" within the area. Raids on these stores uncovered gambling machines, drugs, cash, weapons, and stolen merchandise. These findings exposed the transformation of some shops into underground gambling dens and drug distribution centers. The crackdown is connected to a nighttime safety ordinance implemented in July 2024. This ordinance limits operations for specific stores in high-crime areas between midnight and 5 a.m. Businesses violating the ordinance face fines or lawsuits; the city intends to expand the program. Supervisor Matt Dorsey believes the policy provides a "cooling-off period" to deter illegal activity. Police Chief Derrick Lew confirmed law enforcement's commitment to targeting illegal drug markets. Several stores were closed after landlords were informed of unlawful activities. Officials view these closures as crucial for enhancing safety in the troubled district.
