Scientists Discover Mysterious New X-Ray Objects 'Unlike Any They Have Seen Before'
NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory has identified a novel category of celestial objects. These are compact binary systems that steal gas from companion stars. Unlike typical systems that emit high-energy X-rays during this process, these new objects produce very low-energy X-rays and significant amounts of ultraviolet light. Researchers discovered 84 such objects across six galaxies, including Andromeda and the Pinwheel Galaxy. These objects, termed 'hypersoft X-ray sources,' are distinct from previously observed phenomena by astronomers. Compact objects like black holes, neutron stars, and white dwarfs typically generate intense X-rays as they accrete gas. The team suspects the low X-ray emission is a byproduct of substantial ultraviolet radiation. They hypothesize these are less energetic compact binaries. Their rarity might be due to the absorption of ultraviolet light by interstellar gas. This absorption could explain their absence in our own galaxy, as we observe through the Milky Way's plane. A vast population of these sources may exist undiscovered, potentially influencing their surroundings. The findings have been published in Nature Astronomy.
