A Department of Homeland Security report found multiple failures by the U.S. Secret Service during the attempted assassination of Donald Trump in 2024. The agency missed over 102 radio transmissions from local law enforcement about a suspicious person. Secret Service members only received five phone calls and three text messages regarding the individual. This lack of communication meant Trump's protective detail was unaware of the concerns. The report also highlighted that the Secret Service failed to detect a drone flown by the gunman over the rally site. The agency's counter-drone system was inoperable due to a malfunction and an undertrained operator. Serious communication breakdowns occurred between the Secret Service and local law enforcement regarding the gunman reaching a roof. Classified intelligence about a long-range threat to Trump was also not shared with the relevant field office. Investigators concluded the Secret Service failed to secure the building from which the attack originated. Additionally, the agency did not block the rooftop's line of sight to the stage despite recognizing it as a vulnerability. The inspector general issued seven recommendations, all of which the Secret Service has agreed to implement.
