Seth Michael Larson: Mario Kar... Note

Seth Michael Larson: Mario Kart World and “seamless” media

Mario Kart World introduces a new mechanic where adjacent courses morph into each other during transitionary laps, called Routes. There are 202 such routes connecting 30 courses, some changing based on travel direction. This seamless design eliminates traditional course introductions and endings, blending races together. This "seamlessness" allows for new modes like "Knockout Tour," which features time-based checkpoints reminiscent of arcade games. However, this design also makes it difficult to recall individual course names, unlike iconic tracks from previous titles. The author compares this to algorithmically curated media, where active choice and memory are diminished. While the game's mechanics are not as detrimental as some media platform patterns, they reduce "ceremonies." These ceremonies, or inflection points, might prompt questioning of enjoyment. The passive participant experience leads to a lack of active selection, artist memory, and the ability to be a true "fan" without these moments of transition.
