A recent study indicates a sharp decline in initial earnings and employment for college graduates whose majors are highly exposed to artificial intelligence. Since ChatGPT's release, these graduates have seen a 5 percentage point drop in post-graduation job prospects. Their initial quarterly earnings have also decreased by approximately 13 percent compared to less exposed graduates. This earnings decline is significant, comparable to graduating into a major recession. Graduates in computer science, computer and information systems, and computer engineering experienced the most substantial negative impacts. The decline is attributed to both reduced pay in traditional hiring industries and a shift towards lower-paying sectors by graduates. While the earnings gap narrows over two years, the long-term recovery for these graduates remains uncertain. A separate survey found that while computer science graduates were unconcerned, communication and media majors expressed regret over their choices. However, most surveyed graduates still believe college remains valuable despite AI's influence. Researchers also point out that a decrease in overall job openings is a larger factor affecting young workers than AI displacement alone.
