Simplify VM OS agent management at scale: Introducing VM Extensions Manager

Managing OS agents, or extensions, on large VM fleets is a complex challenge for IT administrators. This operational overhead can hinder the adoption of valuable extension-based services. To address this, Google Cloud is introducing VM Extensions Manager in preview. This new feature integrates directly into the Compute Engine API, simplifying the installation and management of Google-provided extensions. VM Extensions Manager offers a centralized, policy-driven framework for handling the entire lifecycle of these extensions. Instead of manual methods, administrators can define policies to ensure all VM instances, both existing and new, are in the desired state. This drastically reduces operational overhead. Getting started is straightforward; you define an extension policy, select the desired extensions, and then roll out the policy. Currently, zonal policies are supported at the project level for the preview. Future updates will include global policies and support for organization and folder levels. For the preview, supported extensions include the Cloud Ops Agent, Agent for SAP, and Agent for Compute Workloads. Administrators can choose specific versions or allow automatic updates to the latest versions. Global policies offer control over deployment speeds, with slow and fast rollout options available to manage the impact of changes. This flexible system aims to provide standardization and control over extensions on VM fleets.
