Six California Cities Ranked Among Top 10 Least Educated In US

A recent WalletHub report identified Visalia as the second least educated metropolitan area in the US, with Bakersfield, Modesto, Fresno, Stockton, and Salinas also ranking among the bottom ten nationally. These six California cities are all located in the central part of the state. The report also included four Texas cities in the bottom ten, with McAllen-Edinburg-Mission being the least educated. WalletHub based its rankings on factors like the percentage of adults with high school diplomas, some college experience, bachelor's degrees, and graduate or professional degrees. Visalia notably ranked last in the percentage of bachelor's and graduate degree holders among the 150 metro areas studied. While education often correlates with income, some of these less educated cities had surprisingly high median household incomes and lower poverty rates than the California average. This suggests that industries in these Central Valley areas, like agriculture, may not require higher education to the same extent as sectors in other parts of the state. In stark contrast, the San Jose metro area, home to Silicon Valley, was ranked the fourth most educated in the nation. San Jose boasts a high percentage of college graduates and advanced degree holders, supported by nearby top-tier universities. The San Francisco metro area also appeared in the top ten most educated cities.
