Six Killed After US Strikes Boat Off Venezuela In 5th Such Operation
President Trump announced another military strike against a boat off the coast of Venezuela, claiming it was involved in drug trafficking and affiliated with a terrorist organization. The strike resulted in the death of six individuals on board. Trump stated the targeted vessel was trafficking narcotics and linked to illicit networks, justifying the attack in international waters. This marks the fifth such strike in recent months, with previous actions killing 21 people. Trump formally notified Congress of a "non-international armed conflict" with drug cartels, citing their actions as an armed attack against the United States. The administration has essentially declared war on the Tren de Aragua cartel, alleging their presence in the US as a foreign incursion. Human rights monitors and some in Congress have questioned the legality of these deadly military attacks, especially without warnings. Released video depicts a missile obliterating the vessel. Senator Jack Reed previously questioned the identification of the boat and its crew's affiliations. Despite concerns, the Pentagon continues to build up assets off Venezuela, and these strikes are becoming more common.
